Updated on: December 30, 2023
Sarpy County is strategically situated in the northwestern part of the state of Nebraska. This county was incorporated in February 1857. The county is the third-most populous county in the state of Nebraska.  Currently, the county has a population of 158,840 citizens, as per the 2010 constitution. Moreover, Sarpy County has the prefix 59 according to the Nebraska license plate system. This prefix means that the county had the 59th largest number of vehicles registered during the inauguration of this licensing system in 1922. Ideally, the county takes its name from Peter A. Sarpy. The county seat is in Papillion, with Jeff Davis as the current sheriff. The sheriff's department in the county is the primary law enforcement agency. In addition to the sheriff, the person next in the chain of command is the chief deputy. Other staff members include the Division Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeants, and Deputies. Being the largest sheriff's office in Nebraska, the department has several contact details for easy access. For anyone interested in contacting the department, the phone number is 402-593-2288. The department is open to the public from Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 4:45 PM. Equally important, Sarpy County Sheriff's office has the mission to ensure peace and safety prevail in the community by ethically enforcing the law.

Sarpy County Safety Program

This program is divided into four categories. The 4-Hour STOP (Safety Training Option Program) Class is a program for traffic offenders. These people undergo a training program within the county to get a chance for dismissal of their citations. This program has a similar purpose to the 8-Hour STOP Class program. The 8-Hour Defensive Driving Course is a course for the reinstatement of a driving license. Additionally, this program helps people to acquire employment driving permits and under age 21 six-point accumulation. Lastly, the motorcycle training class is a program whose goal is to provide instructions to riders and future riders in general.

The Sarpy County Jail

This jail is a medium-security facility that serves Papillon and other cities and municipalities in the county. Moreover, it accommodates both males and females above the age of 16 years. Being a county facility, the jail is under the management of the county sheriff's department. However, the state of Nebraska Department of Corrections is responsible for overseeing the operations of the facility. The jail's security is under the responsibility of sergeants and deputies under the sheriff's supervision. While this is a rehabilitation center, it also serves an empowerment purpose to its offenders. For instance, it has a GED program that ensures that inmates get quality education. Even better, the jail has a mental unit under the watch of a doctor and a health nurse. In the event of an emergency, there is an ambulance on-site to attend to the crisis. Ideally, the facility caters to all-around inmate needs to make them better citizens.

Bond Money

The jail accepts bond money from Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 11 AM, and 12:15 PM to 4:45 PM. Moreover, it accepts all modes of payment, from debit cards, credit cards to cash payments. However, the state does not accept commercial bonds, including this county. As a result, the court determines the bail amount on the extent of the offense. Inmates either pay the money themselves or get assistance from family or friends, but only if they don't want to remain in prison until their court date. Unlike other states in the United States, Nebraska manages its own bail bond scheme.

New Jail Project

Sarpy County is currently in the process of constructing a new facility. This facility will serve as a Branch Correctional Center to the current one. Mainly, the new project's purpose is to reduce overcrowding in the facility. Additionally, it is under construction to better serve the needs of Sarpy County residents. The construction is underway as of February 2021. In addition, the facility has a 400-bed capacity, being built next to the existing jail.
