Sarpy County is situated in the northwestern part of the State of Nebraska. The county was incorporated in February 1857. Despite Sarpy County being the smallest county in the State of Nebraska with only 241 square miles, it has the 3rd largest population of 169,331 citizens according to the 2013 latest listed United States census data. As per Nebraska's licensing plate system, the county's prefix is 59. This prefix means that the county had the 59th most significant number of vehicles registered during the inauguration of this licensing system in 1922. Sarpy County has its own Sherriff's Department, with its current Sherriff being Sherriff Jeff Davis. And the Sarpy County Sherriff's office is located at 8335 Platteview Road, Papillion, Nebraska. This sheriff's office is the largest in the State of Nebraska, with more than 200 both sworn in and non-sworn in deputies. This office also has special units, including Mobile Command Post, SWAT Team, Search and Rescue Units, Field force team, and Critical Incident Negotiators.

Office Duties

Ideally, the Sherriff is responsible for clerical and managerial office duties too. These duties include overseeing the hiring and training of deputies, filing paperwork on complaints and warrants, writing and distributing the budget, reviewing patrol logs, and managing the County Jail. Moreover, if you want to acquire a driver's license, the Sheriff's Department has the task of issuing the driver's license. The County Sherriff also issues out gun permits to those legally documented, with specific requirements. So for those who have interests in owning guns, they are likely to visit the office and the office shall issue them with a handgun purchase permit. However, it is only available to the county's citizens, and for you to acquire the license, you have to be at the age of 21 or above.

Field Duties.

On the other hand, the county Sherriff also has on-the-ground duties. They include:
  • Arresting suspects,
  • Monitoring traffic safety,
  • Undertake criminal investigation process,
  • Responding to emergencies in and around the county and,
  • Executing warrants
The Department is divide into nine districts, covering a total of 236 square miles. Since the Sherriff cannot cover all the areas by himself, his well-trained deputies take charge of the patrols in these county districts. The Sarpy County Sherriff's office has just one mission; providing peace and safety in the community through the ethical enforcement of the law. The office also has the largest division of road patrol.

Courthouse Duties

The office also is responsible for managing local courts' judgments and orders. These tasks include issuing subpoenas, dealing with tax delinquencies, repossessions, and foreclosures. In addition, they perform the duties of property seizure and evictions. The sheriff's office also is responsible for ensuring that after inmates have been sentenced, they have reached the respective jail safely. Also, during the jail transfers, the Sherriff offers security until inmates get to the next prison. The Sheriff's Department is responsible for informing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents, on the release dates of illegal immigrants, for deportation. The county Sherriff also adheres to the probation department to ensure that they contact the probation department when the county jails receive the juveniles. In other words, the county Sherriff is responsible for the treatment of inmates in the county jails and juvenile detention centers.

Sarpy County Juvenile Detention Center

Located at 9701 Portal Road, Papillion, Nebraska, Sarpy County Juvenile Detention Center is a medium custody security facility. This jail house multiple jurisdiction offenders who receive a maximum period not exceeding one year. It also detains inmates awaiting trial, sentencing, court appearances, and those who violate probations. Additionally, the facility also holds back those who cannot meet the financial requirements for release or those waiting to post bails. The facility is a youth and minor correctional jail for inmates not exceeding 21 years of age. The county Sherriff operates all the activities done in the center, including safety inspection and employing staff to work in the jail. The facility's security s heavy with a heavy security guard-to-inmates ratio. The guards are responsible for security for inmates, jail visitors, and the other staff in the facility. The facility houses about 36 inmates.

Inmate Booking And Release.

The facility accepts all inmates brought in by Papillion Police Department and any other police department under the county sheriff's office. Also, the facility books inmates brought in by other law enforcement agencies in the surrounding towns and municipalities. But the facility only accepts inmates who perform crimes under the State's law of Nebraska. However, the probation department verifies the intake of juveniles in the facility. The detention center books an average of about 50 inmates each day. Upon arrest, inmates have the right to contact their parents or an attorney. And if you lack one, the State appoints one for you. The State of Nebraska does not accept commercial bonds. Therefore, outside bail companies cannot act as an agent to represent an inmate in paying the bond. Meaning that you either pay the bond amount yourself or acquire assistance from your friends or family. The reason behind being that the State Of Nebraska runs the bond program itself. Offenders are released to a pretrial service caseload, and probation officers supervise them or are released on their own recognizance.

Convicted Inmates.

The probation officers appoint a few trustworthy inmates to work in the kitchen to prepare meals for other inmates. For inmates who receive a sentence not exceeding one year, the Sarpy county juvenile detention center receives them to serve their sentences there. In contrast, the inmates sentenced to a maximum period exceeding one year, the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facilities takes them in. On the other hand, inmates in the county illegally, when convicted they receive their sentences like the locals. They serve their sentences as ordered by the court in their respective jails. But, the probation officers are notified to inform the Immigrants and Customs Enforcement for deportation. However, if inmates get to the age of 22 before they are yet to complete their sentences, the Sherriff's Department takes them to the adult's county jails in the State of Nebraska.

Sarpy County Juvenile Probation Department

When police arrest a juvenile, they have to contact a juvenile probation officer to come and determine if further detention is necessary. The Department is responsible for verifying inmates in the detention centers. The juvenile probation officers supervise the young inmates who are on parole or probation. They ensure that the youths are complying with the court orders.
