Webster County is located in the state of Nebraska USA. The county was formed in 1871 and named after Daniel Webster. Inmates are transferred to other counties or states if their crime was committed in another jurisdiction and they are serving time while awaiting trial, or if they need to serve longer than 30 days in jail, and it is cheaper to send them away. In some cases, inmates are transferred if there is no cell available at the law library for their sentencing hearing.

Webster County Jail Inmates

Inmates in this facility are guarded twenty-four (24) hours a day and supervised by officers as they complete work assignments or college classes. The jail also uses inmate labor to help maintain the safety of the staff and inmates at all times. Each cell is equipped with a toilet and sink. Inmates are issued clean clothes twice a week; however, those who do not make their beds daily will not receive clean clothes. Inmates are issued two pairs of shoes at the time of booking, and those who keep their shoes shined may have an extra pair issued to them. Inmates access programs such as work release, college classes, and use of telephones. Inmates are given a daily quota to make on their telephone time. Failure to do so will result in the loss of all inmate phone privileges for one week. There is an infirmary available that has a medical staff that can provide emergency treatment; some medications may be obtained from the medical staff.A Wellness Committee was started in January 2007 for the inmates and staff to work together toward a healthy atmosphere while incarcerated. Each evening, food trays are collected by two inmates from each pod and taken to a common area for counting. The count is then compared to the number of inmates verified by headcount to determine if all have eaten. The trays are then sorted and placed in the kitchen for disposal, recycling, or storage. The inmates are responsible for all clean up including bathroom cleanup, daily. Regular cleaning of the pods is accomplished by inmates assigned to different areas each day with oversight by staff. Inmates with good behavior get privileges of taking a job within the jail facility, assisting with laundry, or kitchen duties. Inmates are not allowed to leave the building during these jobs unless there is an emergency, and then only with a special escort by staff. Jobs also include helping in the maintenance shop, cleaning phone booths and recreational areas, and guarding other inmates working on their projects. Inmates housed in the facility have committed crimes ranging from traffic tickets, drug offenses, and theft to murder. All inmate pods have a dayroom area where they may watch television or play games. Inmates who become models of good behavior, assistance in other areas of the jail, and those with work assignments may spend time in the new library. The facility offers several programs, including family visits, religious services, and educational opportunities offered through Southeast Community College in Nebraska. In addition, there is a program called Project Chance for inmates who want to make positive changes in their lives. This program teaches them about the dangers of continuing to live a criminal or self-destructive lifestyle and teaches inmates how to put that into practice in their lives after they leave the jail. The new facility holds a central processing room where all inmates are initially brought for classification and medical screening. Once an inmate is classified, they are placed in one of six housing pods where it is determined if they will be locked down or remain unlocked throughout the day.
