Sioux County Jail

The Sioux County Jail has been a fixture for decades and is managed by the Sioux County Sheriff's Office. It is one of the oldest jails in the state, and it was initially built to house inmates from the county. The jail also provides some confinement level for those detained before their trial or sentencing on misdemeanor charges.  Those that have committed felonies are taken to other facilities within the state or country depending on where they will be sentenced. This facility provides housing and a custodial staff while inmates await their release date.

Mission

Sioux County Jail is a correctional institution. Its mission is to provide a safe and secure environment for inmates, employees, other visitors, the public, and themselves to maintain an orderly correctional facility.  The facility has been designed for the offender population that we serve: male, female, and juveniles. The jail provides various services, including mental health screening, medical treatment, drug testing/addiction counseling, and education programs to the inmate population in Sioux County Jail. The staff is responsible for providing these services and addressing any concerns or complaints from residents within our community while respecting their feelings.     Sioux County Jail also houses adult males on probation but needs time to comply with program requirements such as additional alcohol monitoring (AM), determined by Judge's Court Order. As an extension of this mission statement, it can be concluded that not only does this institution provide a safe and secure place for incarcerated adults, but it also serves as an agency that fulfils many gaps in the community.  This is because they provide needed interventions to inmates before release back into the community, including substance abuse counselling, mental health services, sex offender treatment programming, and anger management classes. The jail employs individuals, all of whom are trained professionals whose responsibilities include case intake; inmate classification; custody security; supervision of custodial personnel on duty outside the institution's walls such as work details, transportation, and escorting; management of inmates on work details outside the institution's borders such as road maintenance and building projects; inmate discipline hearings; visiting county jail records for public access.

Expansion

The jail was originally built as a temporary facility to hold inmates for only short periods before transferring to county jails elsewhere in Iowa. It soon became apparent that this arrangement would quickly become inadequate given overcrowding issues and increased turnover rates seen nationwide among other counties within the state.  As such, after extensive discussion and negotiations between the Sheriff and local citizens over how best to address these concerns while also appeasing those who feared that gangs or convicts from another location might target their community, it was decided that a new, permanent facility would be constructed. Residents were not happy with the decision to build a jail in their town, and many of them protested against it. They felt that they should have been given more say in the issue because Sioux County is such a small county, and there's not much for money to go around - but those arguments fell on deaf ears as construction began anyway.
