The Furnas County Sheriff's department in Nebraska was created in 1925. However, the idea of the Sheriff's Office was first organized in 1883. The county law enforcement agency is responsible for the sheriff, deputies, support staff, and jail personnel. The department has six deputies, one chief deputy, and administrative staff. At this point, the Sheriff is Jim Molesa. In 2008, Furnas County joined the UAC - Unified Area Communications system, bringing nine local police departments and six fire departments onto one radio network and allowing all agencies to communicate over their repeater system. The department has over 100,000 people to serve in a county of around 885 square miles.

The Furnas County Sheriff's Office is a full-service agency. The office provides law enforcement services for the county, court security and bailiffs, service of papers within the county, and court appearances outside of the county through the extradition process and all jail operations, including booking, housing, releases on own recognizance (ROR), re-bookings and property control. Additionally, staff performs domestic law enforcement services in civil protective orders and child support enforcement. The official seal of the Sheriff's Office consists of a shield with three horses heads above it, separated by two stars, symbolizing the three county commissioners at the time. The wording around the edge is "Furnas County Nebraska 1883". The Sheriff's office has 14 sworn officers who are employed full-time and provide 24-hour coverage to the citizens of Furnas County. There is a Jailer who works Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. All other officers work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are on call 24 hours at their home residence in the event of an emergency or court order.

Accreditation  and the mission of the jail

Since 2010, the sheriff's office has been accredited through CALEA, with the final review in 2012. CALEA is the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. The Sheriff's Office was first accredited in 1994, and this will mark the fifth renewal cycle. The Sheriff currently holds the rank of Colonel through his service with the Nebraska Army National Guard. The Sheriff serves as a Commanding Officer over a battalion. The Mission Statement From the Sheriff states that the county is dedicated to serving the citizens by providing quality services. The facility has been ranked as one of the best jails for its size by Gannett News Service. Tommy Lynn Sells- Convicted of three murders and suspected in more than twenty. After a tip from an informant, he was arrested near Wilburton, Oklahoma, on May 20th, 1999. Richard Loeb - A Chicago teenager convicted for the 1924 murder of 14-year-old Robert Franks with friend Nathan Leopold Jr. Joseph Wood - Convicted in 1984 of murdering his girlfriend, Karen Jenson, and her two children from a previous marriage to William Bennett.

A typical day at Furnas County Jail 

A typical day at Furnas County Jail starts with breakfast which includes cereal and toast and an egg product or meat protein substitute for those that don't eat eggs or consume pork. Lunch is served around 11 am, which includes a sandwich or wrap along with fruit and vegetables. Dinner usually consists of meatless lasagna with salad and carrots for those who don't eat meat. The inmates also work out in the gym from 12:30 to 13:00 every day. This is to keep them fit and healthy. All the support programs at the jail help inmates take the mind away from the lonely life of the jail cells. The programs also help them form skills to help them find a job and get back into society.
