The Dodge County Sheriff's Department, Nebraska is located in Fremont, about thirty miles south-southwest from Omaha and fifty-five miles east-southeast from Lincoln. The population within a twenty-mile radius of this locale was 88,000, as estimated by 2010 census figures.
This County Sheriff Department has a rich history in law enforcement dating back to 1867 with the creation of the Territorial Police Force, which was later renamed as the Dodge City Police Department when it became more centralized. The first sheriff appointed by Nebraska State Law was Edmund J. Loughlin.
Currently, the sheriff's office is under Sheriff Dale J. Schmidt and Lieutenant Chad Egger. The mission of the Dodge County Sheriff's Department is to preserve peace, serve justice, and protect all people.

This department executes all the traditional sheriff functions, such as maintaining law and order in the county. Other duties include investigating crimes that occur within their jurisdiction; issuing warrants for the arrest of persons suspected of felonies or misdemeanors.
Additionally, the department is tasked with serving subpoenas to witnesses or court officials when required by courts or other agencies; executing civil processes like writs and injunctions issued by Federal Court Order; conducting evictions; and assisting the courts in keeping their records.
They also operate a county jail where those charged with misdemeanors or low-level felonies are incarcerated pending adjudication of their case, sentencing, release on bail, or other disposition by court order.

Dodge County Jail is a county jail located in Dodge City. It has been open since the year of 1876. The Dodge County Sheriff Department is responsible for running the jail and currently employs about 45 people for its operations. The jail is one of only two options available to those who need to be detained while awaiting trial or sentencing after conviction on criminal charges—the prison services people in the county, but not those detained for more severe crimes Inmates at the jail are under observation by a control center with live video monitoring. The Dodge County Jail is managed by a Sheriff and their staff of corrections officers trained to watch over inmates. The facility has been in operation since 1876 when it was constructed with stone from quarries on-site during the prison's early years as an institution for housing men who were incarcerated before being tried or sentenced after their arrest. Later it was renovated in 2010 by the Dodge County Board of Supervisors with a $300,000 budget. The jail provides services such as visitation, education programs on behavioral issues, work release to help maintain family contact during incarceration; it also provides other community services related to correctional health and disciplinary investigations. The number of inmates housed in the Dodge County Jail has ranged over time but averaged around 200. Inmates are typically booked into jail while awaiting trial or serving sentences for crimes committed against the law within Dodge County. The Dodge County Jail is committed to providing inmates humane care for both physical needs and mental health. It also ensures that inmates are safe and secure and are given proper sanitary conditions. Some of the notable inmates are Raymond H. Lacy - sentenced to life in prison for the 1988 murder of Frances Browning, and Kenneth J. Kucharik Jr., convicted for the 1991 murder of Lynette White When inmates are arrested, they are subjected to search and seizure of their personal belongings to prevent them from smuggling contraband into the jail. Inmates are also allowed to post a bond and be released on their recognizance pending trial. If the detainee cannot make the bond, the judge will set a bond for the detainee. Inmates who cannot post their bail can also ask family and friends for assistance in posting money as collateral or acting on behalf of the inmate by becoming surety. Inmates at Dodge County Jail enjoy privileges that are not afforded to inmates at other jails in Nebraska due to the lower population of the facility. Dodge County Jail offers a library, games like chess and checkers, free cable TV, electronic mail access for those who don't have outside contact (email), and books on CD or cassette tape.
