Cheyenne County Jail

The Cheyenne County Jail is the county jail for the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office. This facility houses inmates sentenced to serve a term of one year or less and those awaiting trial in other jurisdictions. The jail also provides space for inmates from other counties when their facilities are overcrowded. The jail provides a safe, secure environment where inmates can be rehabilitated through programs that address substance abuse and mental health needs. It also protects society by detaining convicted criminals until they serve their sentence or until legal matters are resolved. This article will explore more about the Cheyenne County Jail and Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office and how they work together to serve citizens in Cheyenne County.

The history

The county jail is located in Sidney, Cheyenne County, Nebraska. This Jail was first opened on October 16, 1874; it is one of the oldest jails still operating today. It was initially built out of brick but was later replaced by a red-brick building in 1878. The jail consists of two buildings: one for men and the other for women. The jail has a maximum capacity of 400 inmates, but the population averages 350 people in custody on any given day. The facility comprises two sections: one for males with 202 beds and one section for females with 148 beds. Six cells can be used for medical or administrative purposes. In recent years, the jail has been overcrowded and understaffed, which is mainly due to high property crime rates. In 2010 the Sheriff's Office found that about 350 inmates were booked into Cheyenne County Jail on average each year. This number was high enough to warrant building a new facility. The inmates in this facility participate in programs to help them adjust to the outside world when they finish serving their terms. They attend a GED program, take part in substance abuse programs, and receive mental health treatment. Prisoners have access to healthcare, emergency medical services, and a full-time chaplain, essential to their health and well-being. The inmates in this facility are allowed to interact with the community through work release programs, school enrollment for those that qualify, and visitation on a limited basis. Inmates with good behavior are eligible for work release programs, which allow them to leave the facility and work at a job outside of the jail. This program gives inmates some freedom while still maintaining their accountability as they have to return each day Nebraska VINE Service monitors the inmate's custody from when they are arrested, throughout their arraignment hearing, and until release. Appriss partners with the Nebraska Crime Commission to run the VINE Service. Appriss still provides services to the Department of Corrections and county jails throughout Nebraska. Finally, the jail has a list of the most dangerous inmates currently incarcerated in Nebraska county jails. The Cheyenne County Jail inmate roster is available to public access through the Cheyenne County Sheriff Office website. The administrative staff at the jail are responsible for answering inmate questions and providing information about inmates or their bail status via email, phone, fax, and mail.
